To fix "Firefox is already running, but is not responding. To open a new window, you must first close the existing Firefox process, or restart your system" do the following:

  * In $HOME: find ~/.mozilla -name "*lock"
  * Delete .parentlock files, and any other \u201c*lock\u201d files
  * The files should appear in one or more directories named with random characters
